Consulting and energy industry firms are looking for people with skills beyond what you might expect for tech-related firms. Their “other” needed skills rank higher than software and programming as well as engineers, a new survey from RTI International finds. So what do these firms need?

RTI surveyed more than 120 Triangle area technology and energy firms for the Research Triangle Cleantech cluster, and the respondents said they expect to hire up to 3,300 people over the next five years.

The survey broke out consulting, energy services and renewable energy firms’ hiring needs with “Other” skills topping the list at 23 percent.

Those skills include:

  • Legal, regulatory, and legislative policy
  • Project managers, MBAs, and analysts
  • Civil engineers and construction professionals

Next comes software/programming.

The categories ranked by largest needs:

  • Other (Please specify): 23
  • Software/programming: 22
  • Electrical engineers: 13
  • Sales engineers: 12
  • Hardware/firmware: 11
  • Marketing: 11
