A North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics team is among the four winners in a national business development competition for high school students.

AirCOM won in the 2013 Spirit of Innovation Challenge’s cybertechnology and security category. The team developed a mobile electronic detection device that can be affixed to a car or carried by a person. The device measures ozone levels, data that is tracked over time. With crowdsourced data, the device can yield information about the levels of airborne pollutants in an area.

The Spirit of Innovation Challenge winners were narrowed down from a field of 20 finalist teams selected from a pool of more than 200 entries from 44 countries and throughout the United States.

AirCOm’s members are: Myra Halpin, Monal Depani, Parth Thakker, Irwin Li and Anshul Subramanya.
