As the discipline of "personal medicine" continues to grow, there will be a new body of law created around it. As a scientist heavily involved in the Human Genome Program, and now a practicing attorney I have seen in just a few years the beginnings of what will likely add to new litigation. There is a developing area of medical malpractice which will likely grow as personal medicine grows. Physicians may be open to lawsuits for using personal medicine data in their treatment plans; and physicians may conversely open themselves up for not using personal medicine in treatment plans. This lawsuit scratches the surface of data quality. Providers of data may well become targets of litigation, whether it is data they collect themselves or data (information) provided through analytics. With nearly every new advancement in science there is likely to be a creation of a body of laws related to the advancement.
