Editor’s note: CityCamp NC will host a CIO panel, the Code for America founder and also put on a “code sprint” as well as the annual NC DataJam competition at its annual conference starting Thursday. Jason Hibbets, CityCamp NC co-chair, offers a preview.

RALEIGH, N.C. – CityCamp NC, an event bringing citizens, government, and businesses together to openly innovate on next generation open source solutions for communities, is happening this week on September 22-24, 2016. CityCamp NC is part of NC Open Pass and will take place in downtown Raleigh at Nash Hall, a gathering space focused on helping create positive community changes.

The event starts Thursday evening with a round of lightning talks, a “Taste of CityCamp,” and networking, and will conclude on Sept. 24 with a code sprint and the NC DataJam competition.

The CityCamp NC program on Friday, Sept. 23 has a public sector CIO panel that includes Bill Greeves, Wake County CIO, Leah Kraus, NC Central CIO, Jane Nickles, Greensboro CIO, and Darnell Smith, City of Raleigh CIO moderated by John Stephens, Facilitator, Mediator and Teacher at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The CityCamp NC keynote speaker is Jen Pahlka, founder and executive director of Code for America. We’re very excited to get Pahlka away from her home in Oakland, CA and from the Code for America headquarters to witness the civic hacking scene in North Carolina first-hand. In June 2013, Pahlka took a year off from Code for America to gain some experience in the public sector at The White House, where she was US Deputy Chief Technology Officer for the Office of Science and Technology Policy.

In addition to our keynote presentation, we have several speakers who will be offering civic inspiration and food for thought. We have speakers from Google, Panopticon, and Esri, as well as the self-professed “gadget-girl,” Lori Bush, Cary Town Council At-Large Representative and Technical Lead at Cisco, who will be our emcee. Speakers offering inspiration include Erik Garr, Regional Manager Google Fiber at Google, Amy Gaskins, Founder at Panopticon, Inc., and John Yaist, EDN Technology Evangelist at Esri

The lightning talks on Thursday, September 22 and the hackathon on Saturday, September 24 are free and open to the public, registration is required. The full event for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday is only $20 for general admission, $10 for government employees, and free for students and elected officials.
