Rothman Healthcare, a software firm focused on analysis of electronic healthcare records, has a new name and a new boss.

The company on Monday named Stephanie Alexander as its chief executive officer.

The firm also said it had taken on a new name: PeraHealth.

Alexander comes to PeraHealth from a 27-year career in the healthcare industry. She most recently served as the executive sponsor of the Centers for Medicare & medicaid Services Hospital Quality Improvement Demonstration project. Alexander also helped create the infomatics buisness for Premier Inc.

PeraHealth was founded by Michael Rothman and Steven Rothman, who had built careers in data analysis. They created the so-called Rothman Index for monitoring of patient health. The two launched the company following the death of their mother in 2003 who died after a low-risk surgical procedure.

The software tracks, analyzes and produces data charts of patients in an attempt to cut down on hospital readmissions, improve continuity of care, save money and improve the performance of healthcare rapid response teams.

“It has been reported that in an average four-day hospital stay, there are 24 handoffs. We have focused our research on developing a tool to help doctors and nurses detect subtle changes that can be missed as a patient is handed off from one provider to the next. As we integrate vital signs, lab results and particularly nursing assessments, which are often underused, into a single score, we can see subtle trends in patient condition,” said Michael Rothman in a statement. “Now with Stephanie’s proven leadership, in partnership with our customers, we are ready to help all healthcare providers and patients’ family members more effectively monitor patients’ health.”

A number of hospitals already use the Rothman Index.
