Charles Hayes, CEO of the Research Triangle Regional Partnership and a champion of economic development for more than two decades, has decided to retire.

“It’s been a heck of a ride,” Hayes told reporter Lauren Ohnesorge of the Triangle Business Journal. “I’ll tell you, I’m 70 years old, Lord willing, in November, and it’s time for me to do something else.”

Hayes said he will step down on June 30.

On that same day, real estate developer John Kane will take over as board chair of the partnership.

“The timing is just working out,” Hayes said.

Hayes has held the job since 1996.
