The startup hub frenzy across the Triangle will soon include Chapel Hill.

LAUNCH Chapel Hill is now accepting applications.

The hometown for the University of North Carolina is launching a startup hub, joining Durham, Morrisville, Raleigh, and Cary as well as Moore County and Charlotte in efforts to help nurture new businesses.

Backers of LAUNCH Chapel Hill issued an invitation for “community entrepreneurs” and startups to apply for space at what they are calling a “venture lab.” It’s located at 321 W. Rosemary St.

Offerings include:

1. “Practical training events and networking opportunities
2. “Subsidized rent and services for those in need
3. “Mentoring by experienced entrepreneurs
4. “Industry contacts and fundraising assistance”

But the focus is local with students and residents of Chapel Hill among those invited to join.

Backers include the Town of Chapel Hill, Orange County, UNC-Chapel Hill and the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership.

The facility will open this spring. Applications are being accepted through Jan. 28.

Mentors will be provided by UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, its Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and other departments, the LAUNCH group promises.

The LAUNCH headquarters became available when 3 Birds, a marketing and communications firm, moved to new space on West Franklin Street, opening up 3,500 square feet in the Rosemary Street building. 3 Birds is a supporter of LAUNCH, its backers say.

The partnership will act as property manager.

The effort isn’t cheap with $245,000 in tax money committed over three years. 3 Birds is kicking in $30,000 in cash and $30,000 worth of in-kind services.

Management will be provided by Kenan-Flagler and the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies.

“LAUNCH celebrates a culture where its members are surrounded and inspired by other entrepreneurs. The objective is to provide candid and actionable feedback, where true grit and short learn cycle times mix effortlessly,” says Bobby Funk, who works with the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership.

“LAUNCH provides business services, such as marketing, accounting and legal at preferential or pro bono rates. Accepted ventures are paired with business mentors in the community and gain access to valuable contacts in the UNC, Chapel Hill and Orange County relationship economy.”
