Google Fiber has moved another possible step closer to deployment in the Triangle.

Cary’s Town Council says it has struck an agreement with Google for lease terms that would allow Google to place five or more “fiber huts” in the town’s limits should Google chose to deploy its super-fast Internet and entertainment network in the Triangle.

The agreement, which would require Google to pay an annual lease payment of between $4,200 and $7,000 was announced Friday.

Cary’s news comes after Google recently announced that all metro areas where it might choose to deploy fiber had met a first round of deadlines for a checklist of requirements.

More details about Google’s checklist can be read online.

“We’re excited to check off another item on our list for Google,” said Bill Stice, Technology Services Director for the town. “It’s now up to Google to identify fiber hut sites of interest, and staff will guide company officials through our development site review process.”

Cary leaders also have voted to support a proposal from AT&T to deploy fiber in the Triangle as part of the North Carolina Next Generation Network project.
