In Raleigh, Microsoft plans to lay off 55 of some 100 software-related workers as of July 4, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice that was filed on May 5.

On May 4, Wells Fargo said it would cut 548 jobs in Charlotte where it is taking over Wachovia.

Also on May 5, American Express said it was closing a travel operation in High Point where 103 people worked.
