City of Chapel Hill joins Cree's 'LED City' program
The city of Chapel Hill is the latest municipality to join the “LED City” initiative launched by light emitting diode maker Cree (Nasdaq: CREE).
The city of Raleigh is a member as well.
Cree is working with cities, towns, universities and other entities around the world to install LED lighting as a longer-lasting, more economic alternative to conventional lighting.
Chapel Hill has installed 10 LED streetlights along part of Franklin Street for evaluation as part of a one-year pilot test.
“By replacing low-pressure sodium streetlights with LEDs, Chapel Hill can reduce energy consumption for street lighting, which we hope will positively impact our budget as well as our carbon emissions,” said Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy in a statement.
Other recent additions to the program include the University of Miami and the University of Alaska at Anchorage. Other members include Anchorage, Alaska; Austin; Texas; Indian Wells, Calif.; Welland, Ontario; Tianjin, China; and Toronto.
