California-based Rapiscan Systems, Inc. is expanding its high-tech cargo scanning production to North Carolina with a new 31,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Apex.

U.S. Representative David Price (D-NC) was on hand for a ribbon cutting ceremony that officially opened the site on March 26.

Some 50 jobs will be created to operate the facility.

A leading supplier of security scanning solutions for aviation, defense and homeland security, Rapiscan will produce the company’s high energy X-Ray Cargo and Vehicle Inspection product line in Apex. All company products are manufactured in the U.S. and represent some of the most sophisticated X-Ray screening technology available in the marketplace for inspection of hidden contraband in shipping containers and trucks. Its high-energy X-Ray system can produce a high-resolution image of a 40-foot container in less than 30 seconds.

The company selected the site for its workforce, proximity to Raleigh Durham International Airport, the Research Triangle Park, and the area’s many outstanding universities and colleges.

"We are very excited to have expanded our cargo inspection system manufacturing capabilities here in Apex,” said Ajay Mehra, president of Rapiscan. “We extend our sincere appreciation to the North Carolina State Office of Economic Development and the other organizations that helped bring this effort to fruition.”
