CHAPEL HILL —
The grant is worth $622,000.
Focus of the project is geothermal resources in Iceland.
"We will develop software that will be applicable to the whole geothermal industry," Rial said in a statement. "In combination with the right hardware, it will make possible real-time monitoring of geothermal field operations, something akin to monitoring the vital signs of an athlete during a race."
The grant is from the U.S. Department of Energy's Geothermal Technologies Program.
Duke University will also work with Rial in the grant program.
