EarthLink Testimony Helps Convict 'Buffalo Spammer'
A jury in Buffalo, NY, has convicted a spammer on all 14 counts for sending fraudulent email.
EarthLink was among the companies participating in the trial against Howard Carmack, who is also known as the "Buffalo Spammer." Testifying for EarthLink were Mary Youngblood, who leads the Internet Service Provider's abuse team, and Pete Wellborn, outside council.
EarthLink has been waging an aggressive fight against spam. A year ago, it won a $16.4 million judgment against Carmack in federal court in Atlanta.
"This criminal verdict puts spammers on notice that in addition to being held liable for millions of dollars in civil damages, they also can be sent to prison for sending fraudulent and illegal emails," said Karen Cashion, assistant general counsel for EarthLink.
