Svetlana Lazebnik, an assistant professor of computer science at UNC-Chapel Hill, is one of five people selected for a Microsoft New Faculty Fellowship Award.

The fellowship is worth $200,000.

Microsoft Research funds the fellowships, which are granted to professors who focus on innovative research.

A UNC-CH faculty member at the College of Arts and Sciences since July 2007, Lazebnik focuses on new means for computers to interpret digital images. Her research is developing methods to search digital image collections based on what can be seen in the image, not on textual tags.

"This fellowship will enable me to explore a lot more and do things that are maybe more speculative or long-term in my area of research,” she said in a statement.

Microsoft launched the program in 2005.
