BioMarck Pharmaceuticals received a $990,000 grant on Monday from the National Institutes of Health, specifically the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, according to the RTP-based company.

BioMarck will use the grant funds to support its ongoing BREATH 1 study, a Phase 2 clinical study of the safety and efficacy of BIO-11006 Inhalation Solution to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The award is part of a three-year, $3 million grant awarded to BioMarck in 2005.

"BioMarck is pleased to announce the continued support from the NIH. Combined with the more than $6 million that BioMarck has raised in its Series C round, BioMarck has sufficient funds to continue its development efforts for the foreseeable future, including completion of the BREATH 1 clinical study,” said Ted Murphy, vice president of research and development at BioMarck.

The BREATH 1 study (BIO-11006: Respiratory Effectiveness of A Targeted Therapeutic) is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter Phase 2 study in which participants will be administered one of three doses of BIO-11006 or placebo for 21 days.

The study is designed to enroll 162 COPD patients with COPD, specifically chronic bronchitis. BioMarck initiated the study in Q3 of 2008 and expects complete enrollment of the planned 162 patients to take 12 to 15 months.

BioMarck Pharmaceuticals, Ltd. is a privately owned biopharmaceutical company that licensed its technology on a worldwide exclusive basis from North Carolina State University.
