RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – In the current frosty economic climate with unemployment inching ever higher and the number of workers giving up looking for jobs (real unemployment at 17 percent or worse), it’s encouraging to know that many venture capital-backed startups are still looking for talent.

As Global Entrepreneurship Week draws to a close, the National Venture Capital Association and StartUpHire, an online job board, have published a series of releases this week noting that there are high-tech jobs available.

Their latest data notes that some 11,000 job openings now exist at some 2,500 startups.

(However, based on the number of job openings, it doesn’t appear that “cleantech” is as red hot as hype would indicate.)

Here’s the job availability by category as of Oct. 27:

• Software – 3,148 (29.5%)
• IT Services – 2,012 (18.8%)
• Healthcare Services: 806 (7.5%)
• Business Products and Services – 806 (7.5%)
• Cleantech/Energy – 528 (4.9%)
• Biotechnology – 446 (4.2%)
• Networking and Equipment – 443 (4.2%)
• Consumer Products and Services – 384 (3.6%)
• Semiconductors – 296 (2.8%)
• Medical Device and Equipment – 280 (2.6%)
• Media and Entertainment – 280 (2.6%)
• Retailing/Distribution – 273 (2.6%)
• Telecommunications – 250 (2.3%)
• Financial Services – 249 (2.3%)
• Computers and Peripherals – 216 (2%)
• Industrial – 94 (0.9%)
• Electronics/Instrumentation – 93 (0.9%)
• Other – 75(0.7%)

If you are in the tech job market, good luck. At least some companies are hiring.
