DURHAM, N.C. — Jud Bowman and his crew at PocketGear are going to be making major news at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week.
The Durham-based company is rolling out an “App Store” for applications developed specifically to run on Windows Mobile operating system devices. It’s the third major launch for PocketGear since November. Bowman spun off the company last summer from mobile content and application developer Motricity.
Bowman, a serial entrepreneur who has been focused on mobile solutions since his high school days at the School of Science and Math in Durham, points out excitedly that the apps store is opening with plenty of choices for shoppers.
“The App Store supports more than 950 Windows Mobile devices, from the Samsung Omnia i900 to the HTC Touch Diamond – virtually every Windows Mobile device ever shipped!” he wrote.
There are “over 2,500 apps and games to download,” Bowman noted, adding, “Hundreds of (them are) completely free."
The Skinny recently asked Bowman when PocketGear would take a crack at Windows Mobile. He remained coy until Tuesday night with the e-mail alert about the launch in Barcelonia.
“More than 1,000 developers have already submitted their apps to the App Store for Windows Mobile,” Bowman said.
Just before Christmas, PocketGear launched its app store for Palm-equipped devices. The firm’s first launch focused on Google Android applications.
