Sony Ericsson, the joint mobile phone and device venture between Sony and Ericsson that is hemorrhaging money and gutting its North American headquarters in RTP, is also losing its regional president.

Najmi Jarwala, president of Sony Ericsson USA and also the top executive for the North America operation of the firm, is leaving “to pursue other career opportunities,” the company said Monday.

Sony Ericsson last fall laid off more than 400 people at its RTP operations. Last week, Sony Ericsson also issued an earnings warning for the current quarter.

Najimi will be replaced on an interim basis by Anders Runevad, executive vice president of Sony Ericsson and head of Global Sales & Marketing as of April 1.

"It has been an incredibly rewarding time for me and we have achieved a lot together in North America," Jarwala said in a statement. "We have introduced an increasing number of new products, grown market share, built operator relationships and, perhaps most importantly, have laid the foundation for North America to play a key role in the long term growth and success of Sony Ericsson. I have been privileged to have led a team of passionate, creative and innovative people at Sony Ericsson and I wish them every success.”
