Hedging layoffs comment, Lenovo CEO says cost-cutting is 'ongoing process'
Lenovo Chief Executive Officer William Amelio backtracked Tuesday on comments he made two days earlier to Reuters about the world’s fourth-largest PC-maker being finished with job cuts.
Reuters talked with Amelio in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.
Tuesday, Reuters quoted him as saying{{a href="external_link-4408420"}} in an e-mail:
"We are confident that the actions we have taken to date represent a significant and strong step in the right direction for Lenovo, its employees and its shareholders.
"But driving cost from our business and building operational efficiency is an ongoing process. We will continue to explore actions that can reduce costs and help strengthen our business."
Lenovo’s headquarters are in Morrisville. Most company operations are in China.
Lenovo announced 2,500 job cuts earlier this month, including more than 100 people in the Triangle.
Sunday, Amelio said: “We don’t plan further layoffs.”
“I’m confident that with what we’ve done right now, we have been able to get ourselves efficient,” Amelio added then, according to Reuters.
