Lenovo Faces Suit from 3M, Also Sues Rival in Taiwan
MORRISVILLE, N.C. – Lenovo faces fights on two legal fronts, one involving battery technology and another a dispute over a contract.
In Minnesota, 3M Co. sued Lenovo Group, Sony Corp. and Matsushita Industrial Electric Co., alleging infringing patents for rechargeable lithium-ion batters, according to media reports.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press said 3M, which is based in Minnesota, has also asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to block imports into the U.S. of the batters or laptop computers that contain them.
The suit was filed Wednesday in Minneapolis.
Lenovo, the world’s third largest PC manufacturer, has its headquarters in Morrisville.
Also this week, Bloomberg News reported that Lenovo had sued Clevo Computer in Taiwan for patent infringement and is seeking millions of dollars in royalties. The suit was filed in New York on March 2.
Lenovo said it is due payments dating to 1999 when Clevo signed a contract with IBM. Lenovo purchased IBM’s personal computer unit in 2005....
