Research Triangle Park, N.C. —
Vivek Wadhwa, a former high-tech entrepreneur in the Triangle, and billionaire Peter Thiel debate whether the cost of a college education outweighs the benefits. Thiel is paying 20 students $100,000 a year not to go to college while pursing ideas for business. Wadhwa says Thiel's plan sends the wrong message....Copyright 2013 WRAL Tech Wire. If Mr Wadwha contends that education made America what it is he has not fully understood what American culture and history are all about; he is only partially correct; While Mr Thiel is correct, the problem runs deeper - educational models have not kept pace with the kids needs in this world, and if the US is behind, try to imagine where the rest are...our educational systems need to incorporate medical, financial, moral aspects and much more as mandatory curriculum work in High School that must be done...and it does not need to cost what it does now in College...only the kids in the best Universities are getting their money's worth - we need to equip our kids to be successful in a changing world, and our educational models are all outdated, irrelevant, and more than boring....R George Eli, Ph.D. (Duke)
I agree with Thiel on this one. College is a good thing, but it's oversold to students along with the idea that high education is necessary to be successful. I'd much rather see these kids forge their own path and return to school if and when they're ready to make that decision.
