‘Biofuels 3.0’: Novozymes, Piedmont Biofuels to unveil pilot plant

PITTSBORO, N.C. – New technology from Novozymes and Piedmont Biofuels that turns waste grease into biodiesel fuel will be unveiled at a pilot production facility on Friday.
The plant is the first of its kind in the U.S., according to the companies.
The technology is called “enzymatic biodiesel.”
The Biofuels Center of North Carolina and the Chatham County Economic Development Corporation also participated in the product.
Located in Pittsboro, the plant is expected to produce 12,600 galls on biodiesel per year.
"This new process of using enzymes to produce biodiesel will increase yields, decrease waste, and allows the producer to use lower cost feedstocks," said Greg Austic of Piedmont Biofuels. "This groundbreaking technology will create more valuable co-products, and will allow existing producers to increase their biodiesel output."
Lyle Estill, president of Piedmont Biofuels, recently described to Biodiesel Magazine the process as “Biodiesel 3.0.”
