UNC-CH’s Thorp, Geomagic’s CEO join Innovation Council

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – A council for entrepreneurs selected to advise the Obama Administration has strong connections to the Triangle.
Holden Thorp, an entrepreneur before he became chancellor at UNC-Chapel Hill, made the committee.
Ping Fu, co-founder and chief executive officer of 3-D software firm Geomagic, also was selected.
The National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship was announced Tuesday at an event in Michigan by Commerce Secretary Gary Locke.
.P. “Bud” Peterson, president of Georgia Tech, is also on the committee.
Carl Schramm, CEO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, which is a major supporter of entrepreneurship, also was selected.
Other members include Jeffrey Wadsworth, CEO of Battelle which is a major supporter of education initiatives as the North Carom STEM (Science, technology, engineering, math) Community Collaborative, and Jerry Yang, co-founder of Yahoo.
Steve Case, co-founder of AOL and now chairman and chief executive officer of Revolution, is also on the committee.
"America's innovation engine is not as efficient or as effective as it needs to be, and we are not creating as many jobs as we should," Locke said in announcing the council.
"We must get better at connecting the great ideas to the great company builders,” he added. “The National Advisory Council will help the administration develop a broader strategy to spur innovation and enable entrepreneurs to develop breakthrough technologies and dynamic companies, and to create jobs all across America.”
