RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – If you can’t wait to get your hands on Apple’s forthcoming iPad but don’t want to stand in line at the local Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) store, you can pre-order one on line or reserve one for pickup.

The iPads are set to go on sale April 3.

While the iPad may not generate the excitement that various releases of its iPhone created, thus triggering huge lines, the device is already generating a lot of buzz.

iPads are equipped for digital reading, Web surfing and video watching on a screen much larger than the iPhone but smaller than laptops.

The first versions to go on sale offer WiFi access.

• The 16 gigabit memory version will sell for $499.

• The 32-GB version is $599.

• The 64-GB version is $699.

A WiFi version that also can access cellular 3G networks will be available later in April.

Its prices are:

• 16GB - $629

• 32GB - $729

• 64 GB - $829

Apple notes that 3G data plans are sold separately.
