MORRISVILLE, N.C. – Some 30 works at Lenovo’s world headquarters were told Tuesday that their jobs are being eliminated.
The layoffs represent a 2 percent across-the-board manpower reduction by the world’s No. 4 PC maker.
Ray Gorman, a spokesperson for Lenovo, told Local Tech Wire and WRAL.com that the personnel cuts were intended to “drive efficiencies and lower costs.” Gorman would not cite specifics on how many jobs were cut where but also said the 2 percent figure did apply to the three-building Morrisville campus.
Lenovo has some 1,600 workers based in Morrisville.
However, he said no other cuts are being made outside of the personnel reduction.
Just a year ago, Lenovo went through a major reorganization, including a change in chief executive officer and chairman roles.
“The major point this time is that this is not a large-scale reorganization,” Gorman said. “Some employees in specific departments and locations, including Morrisville, were told that their jobs were being eliminated.
“These decisions are never easy,” he added, “but they help position us to capitalize on opportunities moving forward.
“We’ve had three great quarters in a row and we’ve made a lot of successful product launches over the past five months,” Gorman said. “We have to be in a position to take advantage of opportunities for growth moving forward.”
Lenovo recently returned to profitability and has been rolling out new products almost weekly, including several that were disclosed at the recent Consumer Electronics Show.
