RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Joel Hackney, the senior remaining executive at Nortel’s RTP campus, is leaving the bankrupt company.
A Nortel spokesperson confirmed to Local Tech Wire and WRAL.com that Hackney is quitting Nortel to become senior vice president for government solutions and data at Avaya.
Avaya is in the process of closing on the acquisition of Nortel’s Enterprise solutions, which Hackney led.
Hackney is also a Triangle resident.
Just how many Nortel employees will be hired by Avaya, which is privately held and based in New Jersey, is not yet known, the spokesperson said.
The number of Nortel employees in RTP is currently 1,600, he added.

Nortel declared bankruptcy in January and is in the process of selling off its assets.
Last Friday, Avaya said that Canada's minister of industry approved its acquisition of the Enterprise solutions unit. That approval was the last major regulatory hurdle to the deal. Bankruptcy courts in both Canada and the U.S. had already signed off on the deal.
Avaya has said it will retain some 60 percent of the Nortel Enterprise employees.
The Enterprise unit supplies landline phone systems and other communications equipment to businesses and large organizations around the world.
Avaya agreed in September to buy Nortel Enterprise Solutions for $900 million, with an additional $15 million for an employee retention program.
