CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) plans to build a battery facility in Texas where it will store energy generated by one of its wind farms in a project that will be funding jointly by the company and the federal government.
Duke will receive $22 million through the Department of Energy for the project. Duke said it would match the federal investment.
Recently, Duke also received federal funds for other energy-related projects.
The Duke grant was one of 32 totaling more than $600 million announced by the Department of Energy on Tuesday.
"Energy storage truly has the potential to serve as a 'game-changer' when it comes to renewable power," said Wouter van Kempen, president of Duke Energy Generation Services. The unit that owns and develops renewable energy assets. "Through this project, Duke Energy intends to show that renewables can play an even bigger role in our country's energy future."
Duke intends for the project to be a demonstration of how power generated by such sources as wind turbines and solar can be stored for later use.
The facility will be built at the Notrees Windpower Project in Texas. The Notrees site includes 95 wind turbines that generate 151 megawatts of power.
One megawatt can provide enough power for up to 300 homes, according to the American Wind Energy Association.
