RTI lands $3.1M federal contract to develop an ‘oil’ based on biomass

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Scientists at RTI International along with private sector partners will seek to develop an “oil” based on biomass with $3.1 million in funding provided by the U.S. Department of Energy.
RTI hopes to develop a sing step process to turn biomass into a bi-based crude oil that can be used as a replacement for current petroleum products.
Private sector partners include Archer Daniels Midland, ConocoPhillips and Albermarle.
"This project will help address our nation’s energy challenges by developing a one-step process to convert biomass materials into usable fuels," said David Dayton, the director of Biofuels Research at RTI International.
The RTI grant was one of 37 awarded by the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy.
