Red Hat, Microsoft enable joint operation of their software on virtualized servers

RALEIGH, N.C. - Red Hat (NYSE: RHT) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) have delivered on their joint promise to collaborate for interoperability in server virtualization.
Virtualization technology enables operation of multiple operation systems on servers and across enterprise networks as well as emerging cloud computing collaborative environments.
The sometimes bitter rivals announced in February that they would enable interoperability between Red Hat Linux and Microsoft Windows Server. Customer demand led to the cooperative effort, the companies said.
On Wednesday, Red Hat said validation of operation between its open source Enterprise Linux software and Microsoft’s proprietary Windows Server was complete and joint support was now available.
According to the companies, the joint solutions offer customers “increased deployment choice and flexibility.”
“We are happy to offer our customers added choice and interoperability in virtualization – the ability to deploy mixed virtualization environments with Red Hat and Microsoft platforms - with coordinated support by both companies,” said Mike Evans, vice president of corporate development at Red Hat. “Red Hat customers have the flexibility to run their applications in environments that span from bare-metal servers, to virtualized servers, to public clouds – and this additional support will broaden their deployment choices even further.”
Added Mike Neil, general manager of Windows Server and Server Virtualization at Microsoft: “This work is a step forward for customers, partners and hosting providers who want to offer their customers the main x86 virtualized operating systems to run applications. Customers now get improved virtualization support between the two companies so they can confidently deploy new applications and services.”
The companies have argued for years about software patents and open source vs. proprietary software with Microsoft at times threatening to sue Linux developers and users.
