MORRISVILLE, N.C. – Lenovo’s “master inventor” Howard Locker says the world’s No. 4 PC maker is making substantial progress in speeding up “boot” times for Windows.

In an interview with Computerworld, Locker reports that Lenovo IdeaPad and IdeaCentre machines certified for the new Windows 7 will boot, or start, in 30 seconds and shut down in 20 seconds.

ThinnkPad notebooks and ThinkCentre desktops will boot 56 percent faster than load times for Windows XP or Vista, Locker adds.

Those are the fastest boot and shutdown times among PC vendors, according to Locker.

A “Velocity” team at Lenovo that is based in North Carolina where the company bases its global headquarters has worked with Microsoft for three years to improve the times, Compuerworld reported.

“Windows rot is less of a problem than in past versions,” Locker said. Asked if boot and shutdown times might increase as applications are added, he said “… time will tell.”
