DURHAM, N.C. - BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, which has a lab in Durham, has won a $77.2 million contract from the federal government for further development of a potential flu drug called Peramivir.
The company also received a request for proposal from the Department of Health and Human Services for a supply of the drug to treat critically ill influenza patients. Somewhere between 1,000 and 40,000 doses could be ordered.
Use of the drug would be approved under a so-called emergency use authorization.
BioCryst (Nasdaq: BCRX) is based in Birmingham, Ala.
The Department of Health and Human Services is funding the research. BioCryst has already received a $102.6 million contract, that one having been awarded in 2007. The first contract covered early-phase clinical trials.
The new contract is for more testing that could lead to drug approval by the FDA.
