RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Quintiles is expanding the reach of its drug research and development efforts to South Africa.

The contract research organization firm which is a provider of clinical trials, consulting services and investment capital to life science companies around the world has formed an alliance with the University of Pretoria as part of its Prime Site program.

Quintiles, which recently opened an operation in Ghana, will work with the South African medical center on potential drug candidates. Quintiles also has Prime Site agreements in place with Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. and Queen Mary’s College in London.

Financial terms of the agreement with the University of Pretoria were not disclosed.

"Prime Sites are large clinical institutions that collaborate with Quintiles to enhance their infrastructure for conducting clinical trials,” said Quintiles’ Christopher Cabell, head of Global Access to Patients. "The University of Pretoria was selected because of its experience in conducting clinical research, its access to substantial patient populations and clinical expertise all across multiple therapeutic areas. Through this new partnership Quintiles will be able to significantly improve its ability to access patients and investigators who are critical to facilitating the increasingly complex therapies under development."

Quintiles has launched seven drug studies this year and another six are already scheduled at its first two Prime Sites.
