RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – IBM (NYSE: IBM) is seeking to capitalize in the growing “cloud computing” and virtualization market with a new offering designed to push collaboration capabilities down to the desktop.
Called IBM “Smart Business Desktop,” it will enable end users to deploy virtualization across enterprise networks. The service will be offered on a subscription basis and through IBM’s own “Cloud” offering.
Highlights, says IBM:
• Offers comprehensive services on a global scale, from initial assessment and planning through design and implementation…to management
• Allows for choices from a project-based approach to a more comprehensive managed services option
• Uses innovative IBM tools including Virtual Storage Optimizer which helps reduce expensive physical storage requirements and enables the quick creation of virtual machines Is an end-to-end, use-case based approach that is focused on optimizing the end user environment
• Agnostic approach allows for potential use of various leading software and hardware solution components
“The IBM Smart Business Desktop on the IBM Cloud is a new approach to virtualizing desktops,” InformationWeek reports. “Due to several potential pitfalls, creating enterprise virtual desktops has been slow compared to the enthusiasm for server virtualization in the data center. IT managers seeking to undertake such a move have to assure end users that their virtual experience will rival using their own machines.”
IBM plans to offer the service in October.
