RALEIGH, N.C. - Jim Whitehurst, chief executive officer at Red Hat (NYSE: RHT) , used the stage at the company’s “Summit” in Chicago this week to throw some verbal barbs at Oracle CEO Larry Ellison.

"Do you want to buy into Larry Ellison's vision of what your IT infrastructure should be and what functionality you should provide to your customers, or should you listen to your customers and be flexible," Whitehurst asked the crowd.

Red Hat is the world’s top Linux open source software developer and a thorn in the side of Oracle.

Ellison, a frequent critic of Red Hat, is in the process of expanding Oracle’s power even more by acquiring Sun Microsystems.
