WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - A Maryland company has bought a site in Davidson County near Lexington for what is expected to be the nation’s largest photovoltaic solar farm.
The Winston-Salem Journal reported Tuesday that SunEdison LLC has started grading on the 357-acre site. SunEdison is the largest solar-energy company in North America.
SunEdison, which is based in Beltsville, Md., plans to spend $173 million. Besides 80 construction jobs, the company plans to have three employees at the site.
"This brings to a conclusion a broad and lengthy search for a site that covered a large part of North Carolina and South Carolina," Steve Googe, executive director of the Davidson County Economic Development Commission, told the newspaper. "We are extremely pleased to have this project site in Davidson County. With this project, our community gets a wide green brush stroke and an opportunity to attract other green-focused companies.
"With unemployment at 13.2 percent, the construction jobs and full-time jobs will benefit our citizens in the region."
Charlotte-based Duke Energy Corp. said 15 months ago it had signed agreements with SunEdison to buy the entire output of the solar farm for 20 years. Production is expected to begin by December 2010.
The farm will produce 18 megawatts of energy, with Duke customers getting 16 megawatts, or enough power for more than 2,600 homes. Some of the energy would be lost during the transfer process.
