Tekelec joins mobile communications industry initiative
MORRISVILLE, N.C. – Telecommunications gear, software and services firm Tekelec is joining an industry group that aims to broaden the capabilities of mobile messaging.
Tekelec (Nasdaq: TKLC) is far from alone in joining the GSMA Rich Communications Suite initiative. GSMA stands for Global System for Mobile Communications.
Other members with Triangle connections include AT&T, IBM and Sony Ericsson.
Tekelec, which announces its quarterly earnings on Wednesday before markets open, is a global leader already in network signaling and short message service (SMS).
RCS services are set to launch this year, according to the GSMA group. Features, according to the GSMA RCS web site, are:
• Enhanced Address Book – provides presence and capability indications, enables users to initiate communications including voice calls, video calls, file transfers or messaging, and allows users to integrate multimedia elements, such as photos of contacts.
• Rich Call – enables users to exchange different types of content, such as video or photos, during a call.
• Rich Messaging – expands on traditional instant messaging to simplify and unify multiple messaging mediums and provide a richer user experience.
Group members are using Internet Protocol and emerging fourth generation (4G) technologies, including long term evolution (LTE). They also include session initiation protocol (SIP), which is a focus of Tekelec’s products.
“RCS will enable operators to launch new services, enrich subscribers’ experiences and derive new revenues in saturated markets,” said Ron de Lange, executive vice president at Tekelec, in a statement. “Tekelec’s heritage of core networking expertise, combined with mobile messaging innovation and our roster of SIP pioneers, gives us a distinct advantage to help define the future of messaging.”
