This map was created by the FCC to illustrate the commission’s broadband deployment results found in the Eighth Broadband Progress Report, which uses data underlying the National Broadband Map, as of June 30, 2011.
Broadband connectivity is improving, but still isn't where it should be and the pace of deployment remains sluggish. The FCC recently released its annual broadband progress report also noting that 19 million Americans are still without it....

With local telephone companies like Sprint/Embarq/CenturyLink being more interested in providing Prism as a DSL alternative to cable tv service like Time Warner/Charter, they are not interested in making Internet available to more people. They want to compete where they don't have a chance to. The local telco needs to concentrate on their core service and try, at the very least, to service their infastructure instead of trying to overload the already overloaded and inadaquate infastructure they have.
As a CenturyLink DSL subscriber that had 1.5 Mbps DSL back in 2000, I still cannot get faster than 1.5 Mbps and they have no intention of upgrading their infastructure to provide anything better in my area. 2 months of service calls and a speed downgrade has proven this point.
I cannot wait for another company to offer faster and more stable Internet in my area. As soon as it happens, I am gone.
Anybody got a tin can and some string? Maybe we can compete with them....
