Broadband takes center stage in Raleigh this week

Welcome at RDU The Fall 2011 Internet2 Member Meeting kicks off on Monday followed by NCREN Community Day later in the week at the Raleigh Convention Center.

RALEIGH, N.C. – It’s all about constructing the network and building the community.

This is the overall theme of NCREN Community Day, which is scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday at the Raleigh Convention Center.

MCNC, the private, not-for-profit operator of the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN), will host this year's annual celebration in conjunction with the Fall 2011 Internet2 Member Meeting, which begins today.

This is the first-ever joint event between MCNC and Internet2.

The two conferences showcase the impacts of broadband in the U.S. and throughout North Carolina and features keynotes and panel discussions that cover a broad range of broadband topics.

Presentations at NCREN Community Day include broadband for healthcare, Gig.U, municipal broadband and fiber, community portals, building communities, and much more.

The Fall 2011 Internet2 Member Meeting features 130 sessions about use of the most-advanced broadband national network and its impact on research, education, public safety, advanced network services, cybersecurity, cloud services, and society.

Special guests and keynote presenters include:

• Dave Lambert, President and CEO of Internet2
• Matthew Szulik, former Chairman and CEO of Red Hat
• Janet Cowell, State Treasurer for the State of North Carolina
• Holden Thorp, Chancellor of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
• John Bardo, former Chancellor of Western Carolina University
• Greg Fishel, chief meteorologist for Raleigh’s WRAL-TV5;

MCNC also will announce the winners of this year’s Community Choice award as well as additional NCREN Community awards.
