Research Triangle Park, N.C. —
Melvin Andersen, a scientist at The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences, has received a $25,000 award for his research into developing alternatives to animal testing in product development.
Anderson was one of two winners in the North American Alternative Award as chosen by Procter and Gamble and the Humane Society of the United States. This is the third year for the honor.
The award recognizes Andersen for a report he wrote in 2007 called “Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century.” Andersen wants testing moved away from animals and to non-animal methods.
Andersen is director of the program in chemical safety sciences at The Hamner.
