DURHAM, N.C. – Argos Therapeutics is launching a clinical trial for its proposed HIV treatment that is designed to help a patient’s immune system defeat the AIDS virus.

The trial is designed to test the activity and safety of the AGS-004 compound.

Ten HIV-infected adults will receive the treatment, which is personalized and based on RNA. It utilizes dendritic cells, which are part of the human immune system.

“A personalized immunotherapy addresses these issues because it is able to capture private viral mutations, providing a matched, complete immune response for each individual HIV patient,” said Jean-Pierre Routy, M.D., of McGill University Health Center and Royal Victoria Hospital. He is the principle investigator and sponsor of the study. “This approach may overcome the weaknesses of other available therapies and therefore could result in a better chance of success for HIV treatment.” Copyright 2012 by Capitol Broadcasting Company.
