Orthopedics biotechnology company Bioventus has a new chief medical officer.

Peter Heeckt, a physician whose orthopedics experience includes clinical work, teaching and research will report to CEO Mark Augusti. Durham-based Bioventus develops technologies that use biologics to promote bone healing.

Heeckt will work from Bioventus’ Memphis, Tenn. office. But his Bioventus appointment represents something of a homecoming for Heeckt, former chief medical officer for London-based medical device company Smith & Nephew. Bioventus is the former biologics unit of Smith & Nephew. Bioventus was spun out into a separate, private company last year.

Heeckt was most recently the co-founder and managing member for Life Sciences Consulting Services LLC, a Memphis-based consulting firm specializing in medical and clinical affairs, as well as health care compliance for medical device and biotech companies.

“Peter’s clinical expertise, coupled with his extensive industry background, made him the perfect choice for the position,” Augusti said in a statement. “He has successfully handled global responsibilities for everything from clinical affairs, medical education, medical affairs, surgeon advisory boards, patient and product safety, research, innovation, and more. We’re excited to have him join our team.”

Heeckt received his M.D. from the University of Munich Medical School in Germany. He conducted his research fellowship in the department of surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania, and completed a second fellowship in the department of plastic surgery at Klinikum Bogenhausen in Munich, Germany.
