Black Mountain SOLE, a startup that combines the traditional campus experience with massive open online courses (MOOCs) is profiled in the latest issue of The New Republic.

Black Mountain, based just outside of Asheville, launched in September with $400,000 in funding. According to the article’s author, Nora Caplan-Bricker Black Mountain claims to be the “first experiment in assembling an entire campus around MOOCs.” But Caplan-Bricker details some struggles with the new model, issues that are more akin to the problems of a startup rather than a university.
