Amazon will expand its footprint in North Carolina with a new distribution center to be built in Kannapolis that will employ at least 600 people.

The Charlotte Observer reports that the ecommerce giant will invest $85 million in the facility, citing information from Kannapolis city officials.

The city has authorized tax incentives of $562,275 over three years. The amount is equivalent to 85 percent of the personal property taxes Amazon would have otherwise had to pay, the newspaper said.

“We are very excited to welcome one of the nation’s largest companies to Kannapolis,” Mayor Darrell Hinnant said in a statement. “Their role as a world leader in commerce continues to evolve, and we look forward to being a part of their innovation in the distribution of goods and services.”

Amazon already operates a distribution a few miles from Kannapolis in Concord.

The company also operates facilities in the Triangle to support its Amazon Prime service.
