Aereo adding Android access for its Internet TV service

Aereo, a service that delivers broadcast television stations over the Internet, will come to Android devices on Oct. 22.

Still not word on when the service might come to the Triangle, but the company keeps promising service.

The news this week concerns expansion of Aereo service to devices other than Apple iOS.

The service started on iPhones and other Apple devices along with the Roku streaming box before expanding to personal computers. The company says that the Android offering took longer because of the many versions of Android available. Device makers are able to customize the version made by Google. Aereo says its Android app will run on phones and tablets with Android 4.2 or higher. It will be in a beta test mode at first.

“At Aereo, we believe consumers should have more choice and control over how they watch television and a big part of that is expanding the universe of devices that they can use to access Aereo’s remote antenna and DVR technology,” says Aereo CEO CEO and Founder Chet Kanojia.

“This year, our focus has been on growing our footprint across the country. It’s been an exciting year for the Aereo team as we’ve expanded beyond the east coast and into the south and west. Our future is bright and we remain as committed and passionate as ever to creating innovative and simple to use technology for our consumers to use to access live TV online.”

Aereo is currently available in New York, Boston, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Miami, Houston and Dallas. Service starts at $8 a month.

A beta launch in Chicago has encountered problems, and Aereo delayed rollout..

“At Aereo, our first priority is to provide consumers with the highest quality technology and user experience possible. Earlier this month, we embarked on our beta test in Chicago and encountered issues with our beta site. As a result, we have delayed our launch in Chicago,” the company said Sept. 27.

“We know you’ve been disappointed about the delay. We’re disappointed too. We are working our fastest to find a solution that works. And, until we’ve found the right solution, we ask for your patience.”
