Charlotte-based 2uLaundry is convincing investors that its app-based on-demand laundry and cleaning service has plenty of consumer appeal.

The startup has raised $2.5 million, according to a securities filing.

“Laundry is the world’s most hated household chore, with the average family spending 36 hours per month washing, drying, and folding clothes. Going to the dry cleaners is a hassle for busy working professionals because they are at work before the cleaners opens or after they close. Then, there’s the added headache of remembering to go back and pick up the cleaned garments three days later,” John Alexander Smereczniak, the company’s chief executive officer, told WRAL TechWire in 2016.

“We rise above the rest [of other providers] for three reasons: the business fundamentals, cleaning quality, and punctual delivery. Other laundry companies have failed because they didn’t solve for driver costs or managing quality assurance at scale.

“Scheduled from their simple web app or via text, 2uLaundry picks up, cleans, folds and then returns your clothes all within one business day.”

Launched in 2015, the company previously raised$400,000 from 11 investors.

The idea for 2U was the result of a student project at Wake Forest University, where founders Dan D’Aquisto, Smereczniak, and Caleb Lamb were aware that no one really likes doing laundry and wanted to offer a service so no one had to.

Smereczniak graduated from Wake Forest with a B.S. in finance in 2014. Before leading 2U, he worked as a financial services consultant at EY after selling another successful laundry services company.

The company operates its own cleaning facilities that focus on being environmentally responsible through the use of a recyclable hanger program, hypoallergenic detergent, and biodegradable reusable bags.
